HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Samples of Ottawa drinking water, collected in Jan. and Feb. 1978 were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC) for 50 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and 5 oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (O-PAH), following extraction of the organic species using Amberlite XAD-2 macroreticular resin. In the Jan. sample, 30 PAH, ranging in concentration from 0.05-14 ng/l with a mean value of 3.8 ng/l and a total weight of 114 ng/l and 4 O-PAH, ranging in concentration from 0.10-1.8 ng/l with a mean value of 0.91 ng/l and a total weight of 3.7 ng/l, were detected. In the Feb. sample, 36 PAH, ranging in concentration from 0.05-8.1 ng/l with a mean value of 1.4 ng/l and a total weight of 50.4 ng/l and 5 O-PAHs, ranging in concentration from 0.20-2.4 ng/l with a mean value of 1.0 ng/l and a total weight of 5.2 ng/l were detected. Twenty-eight PAH and 5 O-PAH were common to the 2 samples. The use of Amberlite XAD-2 macroreticular resin to extract PAH from drinking water was effective, although the recovery of individual PAH from artificially loaded XAD-2 resin varied 57-100%./COMPLICATIONS
