Quality of autoclave preservative treatment of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus cloeziana wood

Wood can be damaged by biological agents due of its organic origin and environmental conditions. To protect the wood and increase its useful life it is necessary to submit it to a preservative treatment. The aim of this work was to evaluate the quality of the preservative treatment of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus cloeziana lumber in an autoclave. For this purpose, trees with 16 years of age were used which, after sawing boards of 2.2×9.0×200.0 cm, were subjected to air drying to between 12 and 15% of moisture content. Then the boards were treated using an industrial autoclave with chromate copper arsenate (CCA). Afterwards they were forwarded to the Forest Products Laboratory of te UFSM for the evaluation of physical parameters, such as specific gravity and moisture balance and quality, such as the penetration and retention. The findings showed that the preservative treatment produced a significant increase in equilibrium moisture content for both species, but showed no significant effect on the specific gravity of the wood. As for quality of the preservative treatment, E. grandis had vascular penetration and E. cloeziana wood had partial irregular penetration; retention being unsatisfactory for both species; which suggests that these species have not been adequately treated.
