Implementation of sample design rules in a commercially used PCB design application

The aim of this work is to demonstrate the implementation of sample PCB design rules in an existing PCB design file. Most commercially used PCB design applications provide for PCB design rule-checking to a limited extent. For example in auto-routing and auto-placement of connectors and components on a PCB design file. The design rules implemented in this paper have emanated from a wider programme of research which focussed on design for assembly issues in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Fine Pitch Technology (FPT). The PCB design application used for these design-rule implementations is Protel 99(R). The main reason for this is that the design rule checking facilities within the Protel 99(R) are more extensive in their scope of application than marry of the other PCB design applications currently available commercially. The example PCB design file used within this application is from Protel's library of PCB designs.
