Abstract
HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. A number of biologically active compounds were isolated from the body walls and Cuvierian organs of Holothuroidea. These compounds are glycosides of tetracyclic triterpenes. H. atra is unique in that when physically disturbed it secretes a toxin burgundy colored fluid which probably serves as a defense mechanism. Separation of the aglycones was effected by preparative TLC on silica gel with benzene: ethyl acetate (9:1) as the eluent. The 2 components which were isolated were previously reported for other species and identification was aided by comparison of spectroscopic properties.
