In spite of the fact that phthalates are subject to decomposition processes in the environment, they can accumulate in some environmental components, such as the bottom sediments, and their content can reach a hazardous level endangering the living organisms. Until now, there has been no information on the phthalates content in the bottom sediments of the Caspian Sea. The objective of the present research was to study the content of phthalates in the bottom sediments of the north-western part of the Caspian Sea. The study is based on the data of the monitoring carried out by the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of the Russian Federation (Roshydromet) in 2012-2014. All in all, 81 samples of bottom sediments were analyzed for the presence of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-n-octylphthalate (DOP), diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and butylbenzylphthalate (BBP). Throughout the period under study, in most cases the total amount of phthalates in the bottom sediments was higher than in water bodies with low anthropogenic impact (Lake Baikal) and lower than in water bodies under sufficient anthropogenic pressure (River Tom). The interannual dynamics was explained by the increased water content in the Volga River in 2013 after five low-water years, and the low water content in 2014. The results of the analysis of phthalates distribution in the bottom sediments in connection with the granulometric composition and the OM content show that phthalates migration routes coincide with the migration routes of the organic matter.
