Abstract
HMTC New methods for replacing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in electrical transformers allow owners of transformers to retrofill at about half the cost of replacing the transformer. Not only are the methods cost effective but the worries of replacement are eliminated. Future liability risks are present even after PCB-containing transformers are landfilled. An owner's liability is removed only after destruction of the PCBs. The retrofill process involves the leaching of the PCB fluid, filling the transformer with a proprietary dielectric coolant to draw the PCBs out of the transformer core, and finally draining and replacing the coolant with silicone or mineral oil. The process takes place over 3 to 5 months.
