BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. A case of sub-acute hydrocarbon poisoning of swans and several separate incidents of suspected chronic hydrocarbon poisoning of guillemots were investigated. The birds' tissues were saponified and extracted with pentane and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The residue levels of pristane in the swan tissues and aliphatic hydrocarbons in the guillemots' livers are reported and discussed.
