Abstract
PESTAB. Studies were performed in which samples of Harp seal tissue (blubber, liver, brain) were analyzed for organochlorine residues. The procedure involved hexane extraction, Florisil column cleanup, charcoal column separation, and dechlorination using sodium ethoxide. Gas-liquid chromatography confirmed the presence of DDT, DDD (TDE), dieldrin, PCB, and HCB (hexachlorobenzene). It was concluded that the dechlorination procedure can be used for rapid, routine confirmation of certain organochlorine compounds in wildlife samples.
