Abstract
Since July 1981, when the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Bioassay Testing Program was transferred formally to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) as the lead institute within the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP), nearly 150 chemicals have been evaluated for toxic and carcinogenic effects in laboratory animals. Summary results from nearly 200 NCI studies have been published. Beginning in June 1983, the cognitive findings for assessing neoplastic responses in each experiment have been placed into one of five categories (or "levels") of evidence of carcinogenicity to summarize the strength of the evidence observed in each experiment: two categories for positive results ("Clear Evidence" and "Some Evidence"); one category for uncertain findings ("Equivocal Evidence"); one category for no observable effects ("No Evidence"); and one category for experiments that, because of major flaws, cannot be evaluated for carcinogenesis ("Inadequate Study").
