The effects of mobile phase alcohol modifiers on high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation of polynuclear aromatics was investigated using cyclodextrin bonded phases. All separations were performed at 10 degrees-C. Comparisons were made for five aqueous solvent systems: water only, 1 percent tert-butyl-alcohol, 5 percent methanol, 5 percent methanol plus 1 percent tert-butyl-alcohol, and 5 percent methanol plus 0.1 percent tert-butyl-alcohol. Test compounds were dissolved in methanol at about 2x10(-3) molar concentrations. Retention times for several compounds increased, some as much as three fold, in the presence of tert-butyl-alcohol. Specifically increased retention times were noted for 1-methylnaphthalene, 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene, and acenaphthylene. The retention times of 2-methylnaphthalene and 1,3-dimethylnaphthalene were decreased. The authors suggest that increased retention times may be attributed to coinclusion of alcohol in the cavity. Decreased retention times may result from increased solvent hydrophobicity. The finding that the two isomer pairs respond oppositely may increase the separation of these and other geometric isomers. The authors conclude that the use of alcohol modifiers may expand the already useful range of activity for cyclodextrin columns since another parameter for selectivity is added.
