Biodegradation of phthalate esters in the environment is discussed with emphasis on structure of intermediates and selection of a number of pure cultures of microorganisms able to carry out certain reaction steps in the sequence of phthalate ester degradation. Since isolation of phthalate ester degrading strains is relatively easy, such organisms are probably abundantly present in the environment.
