HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. The products obtained, identified or separated by TLC, analytical gas chromatography, preparative gas chromatography, and NMR were tetrachloro-, pentachloro-, hexachloro- and heptachlorobiphenyls, chlorinated at various positions. The Van Roosmalen method was used because, after a common initial chlorination of N,N-diacetylbenzidine, the product can either be reduced or converted into a highly chlorinated Sandmeyer product. These compounds were required for in vivo toxicity testing with the American hard-shelled clam Mercenaria mercenaria.
