HMTC A monitoring study was performed to determine the concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT, petroleum hydrocarbons, mercury, and cadmium in lobsters in the New York Bight area. The contamination of the area is due to dumping of dredged materials, sewage sludge, and industrial waste. The lobster is used in the analysis due to its being a resident of the water column during its larval stages, living on the ocean floor during its adult life, and having the capability to uptake and store contaminants. Mercury, cadmium, and PCBs were found in quantifiable levels in all lobsters analyzed. Test methods and materials are outlined. (18 ref.)
