2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzofuran, a critical byproduct in the synthesis of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (a major component in polychlorinated-biphenyl mixtures) by the Ullmann reaction, was produced in order to be used in toxicological investigations. The procedures for isolation of the byproduct are described in detail. Results presented showed that any preparation of polychlorinated biphenyls synthesized via the Ullmann reaction using iodo compounds with chlorine atoms in the ortho positions must be thoroughly analyzed for the presence of chlorinated dibenzofurans.
