Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) residues have been discovered in biological tissues in recent years (Bagley et al., 1970; Greichus et al., 1973a; Koeman et al., 1960). PCB storage in liver, brain, and muscle has been reported (Dahlgren et al., 1971). Analyses of biological residues by combined gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) revealed their patterns to most closely resemble those of two PCB standards, Aroclors 1254 and 1260 (Bagley et al., 1970; Greichus et al., 1973b). However, the biological residue chromatograms had certain changes in their overall patterns as compared to the standards. This study was designed to (1) compare the residue patterns in brains of quail fed Aroclor 1260 to the Aroclor 1260 standard, (2) identify the residue components by mass spectrometry, and (3) determine the specific changes in the biological samples.
