Blood samples from 19 male and 8 female volunteers from the Tokyo Metropolitan area were analyzed for residues of DDT, PCBs, and polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs) using gas chromatographic mass spectrometry. The subjects, who ranged in age from 21-57 years, had no occupational exposure to PCBs or PCTs. All samples contained substantial quantities of PCTs, PCBs, and DDE, the concentrations averaging 5. 0 ppb, 3. 2 ppb, and 11. 2 ppb, respectifely. The data for DDE represented the DDE originally present in the blood as well as the p,p'-DDT present; the latter was converted to p,p'-DDE by alcoholic alkaline hydrolysis. The levels of DDT obtained in this study probably reflect the approximate levels of total DDT and metabolites in the samples.
