Abstract
Books and reviews on the different aspects of marine pollution continued to appear during 1997. The fourth edition of a semi-popular account of marine pollution was written by Clark (1997). The second edition of oceanographic pollution by Beer (1997) emphasized the background required to study coastal problems. The selection and setting up of protected marine areas was discussed as case studies by Agardy (1997). The sources of pollutants in the marine environment were reviewed from different viewpoints. The deposition of contaminants at the mouth of rivers and their effect on the intertidal environment were summarized by Eisma (1997). Coe and Rogers (1997) described the origin of persistent solid wastes especially from ships and recreational use of the oceans. They discussed strategies for control. The National Research Council (NRC, 1997a and 1997b) issued two reports that dealt with marine environmental problems. One described (NRC 1997a) the remediation methods necessary for the clean up of ports and harbors. The second (NRC 1997b) offered solutions for preventing the introduction of nonindigenous species by ships' ballast waters. The effect of urbanization on the estuaries of southeastern United States was edited by Vern berg (1997). Environmental changes in these estuaries have been the result of waste discharges and habitat destruction. The results of a workshop dealing with the ecological risks of contaminated sediments was edited by Ingersoll et al. (1997). The results of the six different groups were presented including: product safety, navigational dredging, site cleanup decisions, ecological relevance, methodology, and international perspectives. The results of a symposium on biomonitoring were edited by Subremanian and Iyengar (1997). Some of the topics presented include bioindicators, specimen banking, metals in organisms, and the use of ascidians to measure sewage pollution.
