A review of the toxicity and toxicokinetics of diethyl phthalate, a widely used solvent and fixative for cosmetic products and a plasticizer for packaging materials, is presented, including studies of human exposure, phthalate toxicity in experimental animals and in vitro studies, toxicokinetics and toxicology of diethyl phthalate, migration from packaging materials, and regulations regarding the use of diethyl phthalate. Studies of human workers exposed to high concentrations of phthalates show limited evidence of toxicity. Pharmacokinetic data suggest that the effects that are detected in animals at high doses are unlikely to occur at the much lower levels representative of human exposure.
